수면 장애에 의해서 심화되는 치매 병리는 인지 기능을 담당하는 뇌영역에서 신경 전달물질의 작용을 변화시키고, 기능적, 구조적 변화를 일으켜 치매 임상 증상의 발현을 일으킴. 결국 악화된 치매 병리는 수면을 담당하는 뇌영역에도 영향을 미쳐 수면 장애 의 악화를 유도하는 방식으로 상호 작용을 함.

알츠하이머 치매 환자에게 반복 경두개 자기자극을 시행할 경우, 신경세포의 glutamate 수용체 등에 영향을 미치고, 인지기능과 연관된 신경세포의 가소성에 영향을 미치는 것으로 알려져 있음. 이를 근거로 경두개 자기자극의 진단적, 치료적 가치에 대한 탐색이 이루어지고 있음.
