Changing your skin is changing your life
As the biological clock speeds up rapidly due to bad habits, skin diseases that never existed before are occurring now. This phenomenon is called "artificial aging," and no matter how much treatment you receive from the dermatologist, it is not easy to reverse. The goal of treatment should not be just relieving symptoms, but also should be focused on preventing skin diseases from appearing and from deteriorating again. We talked to Dr. Hwang Eun-joo at the 3.0 Dermatologist on how to make healthier skin.
Q. CEO Park Bo-hyun of B&H Korea (hereinafter referred to as Park Bo-hyun): I wonder what is the meaning of 'The 3.0 Dermatology'.
A. Hwang Eun-joo, CEO of The 3.0 Dermatologist (hereinafter referred to as Hwang Eun-joo): The perspective on skin treatment has evolved into three stages until now. Generation 1.0 are the followers who like it when the information is there, the 2.0 generation actively searches for information to alleviate and treat skin symptoms, and now it needs the 3.0 generations that actively find and prevent the underlying cause of skin problems beyond symptoms.
In order to become a leading dermatologist in the 3.0 generation, the 3.0 Dermatology Department is integrally applying various treatments that enhance the regenerative power inside and outside the skin by finding the root causes of various skin diseases such as acne and aging. This is not just about symptom relief, but rather the focus of treatment is on preventing the skin from getting any worse.
Q. Park Bo-hyun: Does ‘artificial aging’ mean that I caused my aging?
A. Hwang Eun-joo: We are all born with good skin, but over time, aging naturally occurs. However, due to poor lifestyle, eating habits, and use of cosmetics, good skin is becoming problematic. Incorrect habits cause the skin clock to accelerate rapidly, resulting in skin conditions that could not have appeared, which causes 'artificial aging.
The reason for all skin conditions such as freckles, aging, and acne comes down to a common cause - Thinning. As the skin becomes thinner, it becomes dry and sensitive, and after a certain moment, it increases sebum secretion and freckles. On the contrary, good skin is thick and has good texture, and also it is light and shiny. If the texture is good, it doesn't wrinkle. As a result, if the skin's light improves, there will be fewer signs of aging and acne will also improve, so as an allergy.
The skin can regenerate itself. This power of our body is stronger than any cosmetics, medicine, or treatment, and it is safer to let our body to uses its power of healing.
Q. Park Bo-hyun: What are some ways to slow down or prevent artificial aging?
A. Hwang Eun-joo: First of all, accurately you need to identify your skin characteristics. Many people say "my skin is oily" or "my skin is dry" but they are often mistaken and in need of a more careful classification. For example, there are dry skin conditions which is a result of a lack of moisturizing even if they are oily, and sometimes they are partially oily even if they have dry skin. First and foremost is to know the properties of the skin. You need to be diagnosed in detail by a dermatologist and know exactly the characteristics of your skin.
Next, you must select the correct cosmetics. Don't apply anything just because it's soft. One of the wrong habits is the criteria for choosing cosmetics. The most important thing when people choose cosmetics is how soft they are, how moist they are, or if they are not sticky. You have to look at the ingredients and how well it suits your skin conditions. It is necessary to carefully examine whether a cosmetic product helps your skin, and it is not determined by advertisement or price.
Also, Korean women tend to exfoliate excessively because they believe there should be no dead skin cells. But this is a wrong perception. You should get rid of the habit of exfoliating. Just like bricks and cement that are needed to construct a house, dead skin cells and lipids play a role in keeping our skin strong. The dead skin cells become bricks; the lipids become cement. When there is a moderate amount of dead skin and lipids, the skin is smooth, like a brick that sticks together, and when these dead skin cells disappear, only lipid cells, cement, are left. This destroys the tissue of the skin and the gloss disappears. Also, a lot of sebum is produced, making your pores wider and making your skin oilier. Therefore, excessive exfoliation is not good to maintain healthy skin.
Q. What other habits do people have which affect the healthiness of the skin?
A. Hwang Eun-joo: Changing your cleanser is better than applying 10 layers of moisturizing creams. You'll notice that your skin feels tighter after washing your face. However, this is not a skin problem, but the cleanser we use. If you use a strong cleanser, you will be able to feel it. In addition, the skin is weakened by strong irritation and an inflammatory reaction increases the secretion of sebum. It's just that the degree varies from person to person.
Also, don't apply too much force when washing your face, rub lightly. If you wash your face with lots of force for a long period, the elastic fiber of the skin is destroyed and so the elasticity disappears. If you have acne, the pimple often goes deeper inside and turns red due to friction. In addition, there is a risk of becoming moisture-retained oily skin because of the increase in dryness, sensitivity, and sebum secretion. As the skin becomes thinner, the ability to block UV rays decreases, which can cause stains. A light wash that keeps the skin maintaining its PH balance is very important to keep healthy skin.
Q. Park Bo-hyun: I want to hear about the hospital's goals from now on.
A. Hwang Eun-joo: I think changing a person's skin is changing one's life. The 3.0 dermatologist's biggest goal is to help individuals succeed in life by giving back their confidence that "everyone can have good and natural skin." In order to help people to protect their skin health and only provide "what they needed", we are developing cosmetics that have a laser-like effect and spreading "Energy PDT", a treatment for non-drug acne, not only domestically but also internationally.
In addition, plans are underway to partner with 10 domestic chains and more than 50 overseas entities so that many people can experience what we offer at The 3.0 Dermatologist. The 3.0 dermatologist will continue to make more efforts to become a skin aging doctor who is responsible for both skin beauty and skin health.
