Anus is a window of health
There is a disease that has increased noticeably over the hot summer. It is an anal disease, an unspeakable worry. Raising a small disease is likely to become a big disease. I met with Lee Doo-han, the director of Daehang Hospital, to solve the problems of anal diseases.
Q) Please introduce Daehang Hospital, the first-generation hospital specializing in colon anus in Korea.
A) In the late 80s, it was not easy for patient to receive treatment for colon anus from private hospitals due to poor the medical system and to receive smooth treatment from university hospitals due to the time and complexity of procedures. Therefore, Daehang Hospital was opened to provide treatment specialized in only the large intestine and anus. Daehang Hospital, which started as "Seoul Surgery" in 1990, has now been reborn as a hospital specializing in the colonic anus designated by the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Korea and a hospital that has obtained safety certification. Currently, more than 30 medical professionals and 250 employees are dedicating to studying and treating diseases related to the colonic anus for 26 years.
Q) This year, the number of patients complaining of anal diseases during the summer of the scorching heat has increased. What is the cause of this phenomenon?
A) The hot summer season is never easy for hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are a pain that people who haven't experienced can't know, as there is a humor that tells them not to talk if they haven't experienced hemorrhoids. One of the reasons why anal diseases are rampant in summer is that they are on a rapid diet ahead of the summer vacation. Reducing the amount of food you eat for a diet increases the time for feces to gather in the rectum and slows down bowel movement, resulting in constipation. This can cause hemorrhoids, and if you have hemorrhoids, it can get worse. In particular, during the summer vacation season, meat consumption such as pork belly and chicken increases, so the amount of feces is small and hard. The hard stool is not good for anal health beca
Q) Please tell me the symptoms and preventive measures of "anal fistula," which is considered a mild disease, as celebrities mention the recent outbreak.
A) Anal fistula is a disease that begins when the anus gland, which secretes lubricants to produce feces well during defecation, festers due to the infiltration of E. coli or various bacteria. This abscess again digs into the weak area around the anus tube, forming a long tube shape, and then penetrates the skin again to discharge pus and pus. The fistula usually appears in men rather than women. This is because the pressure of the sphincter is higher than that of women, and the entrance of the anus gland is narrowed, resulting in a lot of filth. In addition, due to the anal structure of men, the anal glands are deep, so even if washed, foreign substances are not completely removed but remain, so the risk of bacterial infection is high.
Hemorrhoids are a disease caused by a bad lifestyle. Therefore, it is most important to develop healthy bowel movements. If you stay in the bathroom for more than 5 minutes, blood flow around the anus increases, increasing the risk of hemorrhoids. Therefore, it is good to stay in the bathroom as short as possible. It is also important to improve constipation by increasing the intake of vegetable fiber when eating. The Kegel exercise, which involves closing and stretching the anus, also helps a lot.
Q) These days, many hospitals aim for "good hospitals." If there is any effort of Daehang Hospital to become a "good hospital," please introduce it.
A) “Sarang Nanumi (share of love)” of Daehang Hospital is a social contribution fund that started as a "1% Club" formed in May 2001 and established itself as it is now through an employee contest in 2006. It was created by adding more than 1% of the monthly salary donated by all employees including medical professionals, and the hospital itself. “Sarang Nanumi” is used to support medical expenses for patients with difficult living conditions, elderly people living alone in communities around institutions and hospitals, and youth scholarships. In addition, we practice love for the community and neighbors in need through volunteer activities of employees such as community cleaning activities, blood donation events, and health lectures.
Q) I heard that doctors from all over the world are coming to Daehang Hospital to learn medicine. What are the special skills of Daehang Hospital?
A) A special technology that Daehang Hospital is specialized in is ESD. ESD is an abbreviation for endoscopic submucosal dissection, which refers to surgery applied to patients with polyps, an early stage of cancer. It is the latest endoscopic treatment that removes polyps by injecting drugs under the mucous membrane to properly float polyps, incise
the mucous membrane around the lesion using a scalpel that can be inserted through an endoscope, and then peel off the submucosal layer. ESD is attracting worldwide attention because it is an endoscopic method that treats colon cancer without surgery. While surgery requires general anesthesia, ESD can resect using a mild sedative regardless of the location or size of the tumor.
Daehang Hospital introduced ESD for the first time in Korea in 2007. In August 2011, four years after its introduction, it surpassed 1,000 cases of colon ESD for the first time in the world as a single hospital. Currently, more than 2,000 ESDs have been performed, proving that it is the best hospital. In addition, the results of these studies are recognized worldwide by presenting them at domestic and foreign conferences such as the American Endoscopic Laparoscopic Surgery Society (SAGES).
Q) What is the difference between the diseases caused by the difference in the diet of Koreans and foreigners?
A) Recently, as the diet has become westernized due to industrialization and urbanization, many health problems have occurred in Korea due to an increase in various adult diseases such as obesity and high blood pressure. Therefore, there is not much difference between patients between Koreans and foreigners in terms of diseases. However, unlike Korean patients who have regular medical checkups, most foreign patients visit the hospital only after symptoms appear, so the possibility of treatment is inevitably reduced.
Q) Congratulations on your recent appointment as president of the Korean Society of Coloproctology
As the president of the society, please say something.
A) The Korean Society of Coloproctology is a historical and large-scale specialized society in colorectal anus disease that boasts 1,400 members. Since its establishment in 2006 under the vision of "the world's best society to protect national health through leading academic research," it has been focusing on research and treatment to play a role as a guardian of national health. We will do our best to achieve quantitative and qualitative growth suitable for the era of colorectal surgeons. Please give us a lot of attention and encouragement.
