For teeth implants, data and technology rather than price!
Recently, dental implants have become very common, but it is still not easy to find proper information. It is also difficult to know good hospitals or the types of procedures. I got advice from Noh Hyun-ki, Director of the S-PLANT Dental Hospital, from finding a reliable hospital to regular checkups that are more important than follow-up care.
Q) Please introduce your dental clinic to the monthly readers of this publication.
A) The Esplanet Dental Hospital was opened by six colleagues from Seoul National University Dental School as co-directors. It opened in 2008 to create a competitive hospital beyond Korea. I was worried at first because of the large size of the hospital, but after nine years, we settled down well and maintained a good reputation among dental brands.
The characteristic of our hospital is data-based treatment. We use the first software that we created with a software company in Silicon Valley through clinical trials and discussions. And the simulation system, a new attempt at orthodontic devices has also taken the lead in developing a treatment that can predict the outcome. The implant procedure I'm going to tell you about today has also been ongoing since the establishment of the hospital.
Q) There are so many implant hospitals these days. What should I keep in mind when choosing a hospital?
A) First of all, I don't recommend choosing a hospital through being attracted by low prices and advertisements. Since it's about teeth that you will use for the rest of your life, you have to compare them carefully and examine them. If you've found two or three hospitals that you like, you should visit them in person to find a hospital that best understands your situation and makes treatment plans. These days, as there is a lot of information and advertising competition is so fierce that it is difficult to choose a hospital, I recommend you to look for a lot of information through various channels.
It should be noted that if you look at the information on the Internet, there are reviews written by patients themselves, but most of them are promotional comments posted by hospitals or advertising agencies, so you should distinguish them well. And how much clinical experience the hospital has is also very important. Our hospital has been visited by about 30,000 patients since its opening. As such, we have a variety of experiences in the procedure that lead us to perform a safer procedure.
Q) Most patients feel burdened in terms of cost. Would it be beneficial to have dental insurance other than health insurance?
A) Most patients who need implants are middle-aged and elderly people who are eligible for health insurance. Regarding young people, there are not many cases since there are events of accidents. In fact, the coverage covered by dental insurance is not that wide. There are limitations in duration and number, and among the cases where implantation is required, bone transplantation is often related to insurance coverage. Based on clinical judgment and radiographs, you should determine whether it is appropriate for your situation. The dental insurance market is still in the process of maturing, but I think it will one day contribute a lot to increasing the cost burden on patients.
Q) When do you need a bone transplant implant? Is it related to diseases such as diabetes?
A) If proper quantitative and qualitative growth and maturation of bone do not occur during the healing process, bone transplantation is necessary. After the transplantation of artificial bone, your bones, or your tooth bone and the healing period, you go through a stage of maturing into your own bone through the action of osteoblasts. After a year, all bone patterns are similar. In the case of diabetes, whether or not to control sugar is very important in the treatment process.
In addition to diabetes, there are people who feel a strong fear of mental problems or dental treatment. In that case, an anesthesiologist at our hospital will perform sleep implant treatment that precedes general anesthesia. In the case of dental treatment, it is performed in the oral cavity and if foreign substances pass over in the process, the airway may be blocked, so light anesthesia like an endoscope is not possible. The operation should be performed after deeper anesthesia and obstruction of the airway.
Surgery is performed to the stage of implantation and insert temporary teeth. When the surgical site stabilizes in about three months, the patient re-visits the hospital to make a model and create a prosthetics. For patients with high fear of implants, hospitals are actively promoting sleep implant treatment, and many patients are looking for it after seeing this information. It can also be applied to people with intellectual disabilities, which is of great help to patients and medical staff. There are not many hospitals equipped with these systems or equipment yet.
Q) Korea's implant technology is so famous overseas, that recently, the number of foreign patients is increasing as word of mouth has spread to Southeast Asian countries. But wouldn't there be restrictions as the treatment period is long?
A) Pre-data is important as the duration of treatment varies greatly depending on the patient's condition. Patients from Mongolia or Southeast Asia cannot proceed according to the medical procedures of Korean. It's because they can't visit often. However, if we can receive information such as CT or photos of the patient in advance, we can set up a treatment plan and an efficient schedule based on it.
Foreign patients basically visit twice and schedule their stay to not exceed a week. The more accurate the information that the patient sends in advance, the more reliable the outcome and the schedule for stay. For example, as the hospital is promoting directly to Russia in English, we provide service in the way that if an inquiry is received, accurate prior information from the local dentist is to be requested. And based on that, we send the expected results.
Q) The best thing is not to go to the stage of the implant procedure. What kind of care is needed for that?
A) The first treatment at our hospital is basically to save your teeth, and the next thing you consider is implants. Treatment is performed in the direction of preserving one's teeth as much as possible, but if it is uncomfortable after treatment, implantation is performed. The decision is up to the patient himself.
In the case of our patients, some people visit the hospital after their dental health has deteriorated significantly. For example, since airline captains may find it difficult to receive regular treatment due to stress and irregular flight schedules, they require overall treatment. I motivate such patients to have self-directed care and regular checkups. In fact, patients who receive such a large amount of treatment thoroughly treat after that and remain in good condition even after a few years. The importance of dental care and checkups is often realized only after such a hard time. Regular checkups every six months at the expense of dental insurance can prevent big treatments and reduce treatment costs. In particular, those in the age of teens and ver mid-30s are easy to neglect management the teeth. Caution is needed.
