Dissemination of top-notch surgical skills from domestic to overseas
Suncheon Medical Foundation Jeong Hospital (hereinafter referred to as Jeong Hospital) has established itself as a regional base hospital by possessing the best sterile and clean operating room in Korea. Being selected as the best emergency medical institution capable of performing high-level surgery, this hospital is the only one in Sujeong-gu (Seongnam-si) equipped with advanced medical facilities as well as specialized nursing facilities. I met Jung In-hwa, the representative director of Jeong Hospital, who is famous for his surgical techniques such as joint surgery.
Q. MEDIEUS QUEEN: As the population ages, the importance of bone and joint surgery is increasing. Please introduce the competitiveness and excellence of Jeong Hospital, which is differentiated from other orthopedic clinics.
A. Jung In-hwa, CEO of Jeong Hospital (hereafter Jeong In-hwa): Jeong Hospital started as an orthopedic specialty hospital in 1982. Since then, as the size of the hospital has grown, many departments have been added to support orthopedic surgery. This is because major surgery requires a good understanding of the patient's condition to minimize the risk. In particular, elderly patients frequently have medical problems such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Successful surgery without complications is possible only when internal and surgical problems are well resolved.
Although orthopedic surgery is the main, Jeong Hospital is currently a general hospital that can provide all types of treatment. Academic knowledge of orthopedic surgery is at a similar level in each hospital. However, what makes Jeong Hospital more outstanding than other hospitals is that it is working with outstanding medical professionals in each field, including Professor Yoo Myung-cheol (former director of Kyung Hee University Hospital), a renowned scholar and doctor in the field of joints. Medical knowledge is easy to understand, but acquiring it depends on the efforts of the physician. Jeong Hospital holds regular academic seminars twice a week on its own, doing its best to advance academically and technically. In addition, multiple medical staff works as a team during surgery to minimize mistakes. Excellent faculty armed with the latest knowledge and high teamwork are the strengths of Jeong Hospital.
Q. MEDIEUS QUEEN: Since artificial joints were first introduced in Korea in the 1970s, how advanced has the technology for joint surgery been?
A. Jeong In-hwa : In the 1960s and 1970s, artificial joints were often easily damaged after surgery. Surgery began to be relatively successful when Professor John Charnley of England produced research results. At the time, hip (hip joint) surgery had a high success rate, but knee joint (knee joint) had a low success rate. It was a miserable level that would quickly wear out or become infected even after hard surgery. Knee surgery is a relatively late field with the advancement of anatomical, mechanical, and material engineering technologies. It was only in the 1990s when good materials were used to reduce wear and design know-how of artificial joints was accumulated, that artificial joints that did not break even after 5 to 10 years could be made.
In the 2000s, the level of knee artificial joint surgery was higher than that of the hip joint. Now, knee arthroplasty has good results and the rate of damage after surgery is very low, making it a popular operation that about 100,000 people receive in Korea alone. However, about 20% of patients still experience pain infrequently. It means that there is still a lot of room for improvement in the future. There is much more to be researched from materials to surgical techniques. The issue related to alignment, balance, and dynamics in knee surgery will develop further in the future. In addition to medicine, scientific developments (robots, computers) are also expected to enable more precise alignment and balance.
Q. MEDIEUS QUEEN: What kind of joint disease are many patients receiving treatment for these days? And if there is a medical trend to treat it, please tell me.
A. Jeong In-hwa : It can be said that degenerative diseases caused by aging are the most common as we enter an aging society. Next, there are a lot of traumatic diseases caused by sports accidents. In other words, it can be largely divided into disease (degenerative disease) and injury (traumatic disease). In terms of trauma, young people often break bones or lose joint balance due to sports activities, but in the elderly, falls caused by falls are the main feature. This is because as you age, your bones become weaker and break more easily. Although it is traumatic, it can be seen that it is related to disease (degenerative disease) in that it frequently occurs as the body becomes weak.
There is no right answer in medicine. Each person's body is different, and treatment methods are also changing with the times. In the past, surgery was the top priority for the treatment of the back, spine, and disc, but depending on the times, people prefer to treat it with medicine. Recently, non-surgical procedures are becoming more popular than surgery. In addition to medical technology, it is a trend that influences government policies, such as whether surgery is covered by insurance. However, the judgment of the medical profession is very important because the individual condition and degree of damage are different even among various factors. This is why medical professionals must constantly improve their skills.
Q. MEDIEUS QUEEN: If there are any ways to prevent orthopedic disease in everyday life, please introduce them.
A. Jeong In-hwa: Sports players do stretching (warm-up) before the game to avoid getting hurt. Likewise, stretching is necessary for joint health in daily life. It is important to keep your body flexible through light stretching.
Next is diet. You need to build a healthy body as well as bones with a balanced nutrition intake. Sometimes, some people limit meat (protein) intake to an extreme for an unreasonable diet, but it is better to avoid an unbalanced nutritional intake.
Finally, it is about lifestyle. Avoid being in a rigid position for long periods. It is good to have a habit of taking a break such as a case in school where a 10-minute break is allowed after 50 minutes class. Also, consistent exercises to strengthen muscles are very helpful in protecting joints.
Q. MEDIEUS QUEEN: Recently, Jeong Hospital is promoting the establishment of a hospital in Uzbekistan to spread Korea's advanced medical care. I understand that you visited the site to volunteer for artificial joint surgery free of charge. Please let us know if you have any plans for the future.
A. Jeong In-hwa: Jeong Hospital is planning to enter Uzbekistan. At the request of Uzbekistan officials who have experienced excellent medical standards in Korea, it has made considerable progress. Although it is being pursued in the form of a comprehensive examination center that can treat all diseases, the goal is to become a hospital that specializes in surgical operations by taking advantage of Jeong Hospital's surgical expertise. Through this, we hope to contribute not only to medical exchanges and cooperation but also to cultural exchanges. Just as we were able to stand up with the help of other countries in this land devastated by the Korean War in the past, now we want to spread our good intentions in Uzbekistan.
