Reinterpretation of German Gerson therapy, Korean-style cancer treatment
During his medical service in Africa, Dr. Schweitzer contracted diabetes and his wife contracted tuberculosis. Since there was no drug for tuberculosis at that time, Dr. Max Gerson, a German doctor, listened to Dr. Schweitzer's request and suggested diet treatment. As diabetes and tuberculosis were treated, diet treatment received worldwide attention.
Since then, Dr. Gerson, who established a treatment center in New York, has proven that it is effective not only for tuberculosis but also for cancer treatment, and has become a leader in dietary cancer treatment.
Q. MEDIEUS QUEEN: Please tell us about yourself and what kind of treatment you specialize in.
A. Good World Jeam (Anti-Cancer) Clinic Director Lee Young-seok (hereafter Lee Young-seok): Hello. After seeing my father's sudden diagnosis of esophageal cancer in 2001, and his suffering from the aftereffects of cancer surgery and subsequent radiation treatment, I introduced complementary and alternative medicine (Anti-cancer Gerson Therapy) for cancer patients, which was being practiced in Germany at the time and opened the first German-style cancer treatment hospital at Dogok-dong in Korea.
Even now, only surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation treatment are performed at domestic university hospitals, and there is no medical service to treat many aftereffects and complications that occur during the treatment process or to prevent recurrence and metastasis. At Good World Anti-cancer Clinic, we are introducing treatment mainly from Germany, such as diet therapy, vitamin treatment, and heat treatment.
Q. Medius Queen: Is it possible to treat cancer with diet? I am curious about the difference between the Anti-cancer Gerson method and the general diet method.
A. Lee Young-seok : Conventional medicine, represented by surgery and medicine, exerts great power for acute or emergency patients. By suppressing germs by administering antibiotics, you can be safe from infectious diseases, and accidentally broken and bleeding patients can be treated with only a few hours of surgery.
However, in chronically progressing degenerative metabolic diseases, autoimmune diseases, or metabolic syndromes such as hypertension and diabetes, there may be critical errors unless the root cause is deeply explored. In order to treat these chronic intractable diseases, holistic management that manages the entire lifestyle, including diet, exercise, detoxification, immunotherapy, mental therapy, as well as improvement of the living environment, is required.
Dr. Max Gerson, a German doctor, treats numerous cancer patients and chronic intractable patients based on ‘nutrition’ and ‘detoxification, which is a representative example of holistic treatment that has been recognized worldwide. Jeam Gerson Therapy is a Korean-style Gerson Therapy that has been modified to suit the situation in Korea based on Gerson Therapy, which has proven to be effective. The basis of Jeam Gerson's diet is a low-sodium and vegetable diet, which includes 13 glasses of fresh vegetable juice a day, Hippocratic detox soup, brown rice, salad, and grilled vegetables.
Q. MEDIEUS QUEEN: Can the dietary treatment you mentioned help prevent disease if it is implemented before the onset of the disease?
A. Lee Young-seok : It is not that a healthy person suddenly becomes a patient, but rather goes through a state of ‘unknown” for a considerable period before being diagnosed with a disease. In other words, it is an intermediate state that has not yet been diagnosed with diabetes or cancer but will soon progress to disease if left untreated. Once diagnosed with a disease, there is no going back to a disease-free state. Therefore, when you are healthy or in a state of unknown, you can maintain a healthy state for a long time by making efforts such as diet, exercise, and environmental improvement. Preventing and treating diseases through these lifestyle improvements is called ‘Epigenetics’.
The Jeam Gerson Therapy can be said to be an action protocol for such ‘epigenetics’. It can be said that diseases can be prevented as much as possible by avoiding instant food and deliciously cooked food, limiting animal protein and fat, eating bland, and consuming a lot of fresh vegetables, doing exercise regularly, and controlling stress.
Q. Medius Queen: Compared to the past, has there been any change in dietary therapy? Also, as treatment trends change, it seems that there has also been a change in the perception of dietary therapy.
A. Lee Young-seok : When I established the hospital about 10 years ago, only diet therapy was performed without vitamin C treatment or heat treatment. The majority of patients who visit the hospital also feel unfamiliar with the idea of treating cancer with diet. However, recently, about 70% of cancer patients who visit the hospital are already on their own diet, and various scientific treatments are also being prescribed.
Unfortunately, not only patients but also the general public are becoming more interested in eating, so information about food is overflowing, and some incorrect information can be poisonous. There are cases in which people who should not diet, those who cannot eat because they have ascites, those who have an intestinal obstruction, or those who eat only one cup a day do diet. The importance of diet is known, but it seems that it has not yet been established how to rationally implement it. For this reason, we provide sufficient explanations about dietary therapy to patients who visit the clinic, and recently opened a YouTube channel called ‘Delicious Medicine’ to create a window for patients and doctors to communicate about dietary therapy.
Q. MEDIEUS QUEEN: When searching for dietary information, some people blindly recommend a low-salt diet, and there is also information that salt is good, which seems to add to the confusion of patients. What do you need to know to get the right diet? What tips would you give to patients who want to start diet therapy?
A. Lee Young-seok: To describe the Jeam Gerson Therapy in one word, it is about ‘low-salt diet’ and 'vegetable meals'. However, a low-salt diet does not mean a salt-free diet. There is no such thing as a salt-free diet. All food ingredients, including vegetables, already contain sodium, a salt component. Sodium is an essential mineral for life, so humans cannot live without it. The low-salt diet in Jeam Gerson's diet means that you don't add unnecessary salt to your dishes to add flavor.
Dieting is really hard because it involves changing the way you eat. In order to succeed in diet therapy, you must have a desperate heart for goals such as “cancer must be cured” and “blood sugar must be reduced”. Second, the head must understand. If you don't understand why you need to reduce salt, your body won't move easily. I believe that if you feel healthy by doing it for a week, two weeks, and a month, you will succeed in diet and everyone will be healthy.
Q. MEDIEUS QUEEN: Dr. Lee, please tell us if there is something you are personally aiming for in the future.
A. Lee Young-seok: My internet nickname is ‘interpreter doctor’. Through the 'Healing Center', which is actively progressing in medically advanced countries, I would like to deliver correct medical information to patients as well as the general public and provide medical services to help them experience a healthy lifestyle. Also, I want to develop and provide food 'Medicinal Food' that prevents and treats diseases to create a medical system that prevents diseases and fundamentally heals them with the body's healing power, rather than just controlling symptoms with medicine after an onset.
