A healthy diet that you can practice in your daily life
Recently, many people are on a diet to take body profiles. However, due to extreme diet for a short period, the number of cases complaining of various side effects such as the yo-yo effect, eating disorders, and psychological depression is increasing. In order to talk about dieting methods that can be practiced steadily without the yo-yo effect, considering not only beauty but also health, I met with Choi Bo-yoon, Director of Dr. Skinny Clinic.
Q. Medieus Queen: Hello. It's an honor to meet Dr. Skinny's Dr. Choi Bo-yoon, a skin, and body care specialist. I understand that you directly experience various diet methods. Based on that experience and research, I think you will suggest a body shape management method that patients can relate to and practice in reality. Please introduce the differences between Dr. Skinny's clinic.
A. Dr. Skinny Clinic Choi Bo-yoon (hereinafter referred to as Choi Bo-yoon): Dr. Skinny Clinic is performing fat removal injections, body elasticity, high frequency, and in vitro shock waves to improve swelling for a beautiful body line.
In order to maximize and maintain the effectiveness of the procedure, diet management is also very important. So our hospital provides a healthy diet program called "Calo Check," which sets and checks the diet according to individual circumstances. There are many ways to lose weight, but in the long run, it is important not to get yo-yo after dieting. Based on our numerous diet clinical experiences, we have the know-how of diet and treatment that is not hard but healthy without the yo-yo effect.
First of all, for a healthy diet, we recommend dieting while eating. Those who start dieting for the first time are so much motivated that they tend to choose extreme fasting like starving or eating only salad for three meals. In this case, this excessive diet is not recommended because it will lead to binge eating within a few days. I recommend a personalized diet that each person can consistently practice without overdoing it. To this end, through a program called Calo Check, we provide feedback on your daily diet and set up a diet that loses weight together. As it is not easy to manage your diet on your own, the hospital helps you with this part and checks it. Thanks to this Calo-check program, most customers are on a healthy diet that keeps their muscles and loses only body fat, and as they are on a diet together, not alone, they can continue their diet to achieve their target weight.
Q. Medieus Queen: It is said that diet is more important than exercise in weight loss, but it is often difficult for office workers to practice due to the nature of work like overtime or company dinners. What are some realistically possible tips or methods?
A. Choi Bo-yoon: In the case of office workers, it is often difficult to keep their diet if they have a company dinner or overtime even though they are on a diet steadily. For this case, there are some tips. As many foods are high in calories at the company dinner, you can choose foods that are as low in calories as possible. For example, if you go to a meat restaurant, it is important to choose which part of the meat. As pork belly and beef brisket contain up to 2 to 3 times higher fat than regular meat, instead, it is good to choose meat with low-fat content such as tenderloin.
Alcohol is also the main culprit in interfering the dieting. When you drink alcohol, your body puts aside other work and it takes priority to break down the alcohol, so the snacks you eat with alcohol cannot be metabolized and stored in fat tissue. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid alcohol during dieting. If it is difficult to avoid drinking, it is recommended to drink a lot of water together when drinking alcohol. For example, if you took a sip of alcohol, it is recommended to drink enough water.
If you are given the option of a company dinner menu, it is recommended to avoid Chinese restaurants because there are few low-calorie foods, and I recommend Korean restaurants, shabu-shabu restaurants, and Japanese restaurants. At Korean restaurants, you should reduce the amount of rice, and at shabu-shabu restaurants, you should eat enough meat and vegetables, but without noodles. In addition, seafood in Japanese restaurants is good for dieting because it is a protein food with less fat, but in the case of sushi, since rice has a lot of carbohydrates, it is better to eat seafood rather than sushi.
Q. Medieus Queen: With the recent popularity of body profiles, while people try extreme diet and exercise for a short period, there are many cases of complaints of side effects such as the yo-yo effect, eating disorders, and psychological aftereffects. Are there any principles or methods to follow to have a successful and healthy diet in a short period?
A. Choi Bo-yoon: With the recent popularity of body profiles, many people visit the hospital to clean up the fat before taking their body profiles. However, the number of people visiting the hospital has increased due to sudden weight gain after the body profile is over. If you're on a diet for a too short period, you usually experience the yo-yo. To lose weight in a short period, extreme dietary restrictions are required, and this excessive fasting often leads to binge eating after dieting. Therefore, it is recommended that you prepare your body profile in a relaxed manner, not too short a time. If you prepare with some time, you can continue your diet without overdoing it. The normal speed of a healthy diet is to lose about 1kg a week (on a female basis) (the speed of losing is faster for men). Based on this, it's good to calculate how much total weight you have to lose and how many weeks it's good to set the diet period for this.
And the diet strategy after the body profile is also important. Most people eat a lot after the body profile due to the exploding appetite they have endured. It is important to gradually increase the amount of food right after the body profile in order to avoid the gain of weight again. For example, if you had only eaten chicken breast for three meals a day, it is recommended that you increase the amount of breakfast and lunch as a regular meal. I recommend late-night snacks or dining out only once a week, and a gradual increase in the amount of food by controlling the diet in the day after you eat late-night snacks.
Q. Medieus Queen: The prolonged COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increase in the number of obese people to the extent that the buzzword "a person who gains a lot of weight " has emerged. In particular, it is said that obesity also affects immunity, so I wonder why obesity is dangerous and what are the ways to overcome it.
A. Choi Bo-yoon: Obesity can be seen as a disease that causes various diseases as well as beauty problems. Fat cells in the belly, especially visceral fat, secrete an inflammatory substance called adipokine which causes chronic inflammation in our bodies. If chronic inflammation persists, it can damage the vascular cavity and disturb blood sugar or fat metabolism, causing diabetes or cardiovascular disease. In addition, visceral fat dissolves well in the blood, raising blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels, which can cause hyperlipidemia and high blood pressure.
Obese people may be more vulnerable to infection due to reduced immunity. It is important to improve obesity which is the source of many diseases because neutrophils that play a major role in congenital immunity may not play the role properly and may make them more vulnerable to infection. Diet control is essential to overcome obesity. You should refrain from ordering delivery food, reduce excessive carbohydrate intake, and eat high-quality protein-oriented meals. Also, if you exercise, it will be helpful to diet if you exercise steadily at a breathless and sweaty intensity rather than a light walk.
Q. Medieus Queen: There are a variety of diet methods, including lipolysis injection, liposuction, and appetite suppressants, as well as diet and exercise. Is there a case where it can or cannot be applied to see the effect of each method? And what are the precautions?
A. Choi Bo-yoon: Although diet and exercise are basic to weight loss, flabby flesh that cannot be removed should be reduced by procedures such as lipolysis or liposuction. Liposuction has the advantage of being able to remove fat in large quantities, but it has the disadvantage of having to undergo general anesthesia and having a scar and more cellulite due to adhesion after surgery. On the other hand, lipolysis injections reduce fat volume by injecting ingredients that break down and destroy fat into the fat layer. Since it is not surgery, there is no burden of general anesthesia and no side effects such as scars or adhesion after the procedure.
In the case of liposuction, a large amount of fat can be removed with a single surgery, but in case the fat thickness is not thick, excessive suction can cause side effects such as uneven adhesion or unevenness in the treatment area after surgery. Therefore, it is recommended to consult with the medical staff before surgery to see if liposuction is suitable.
In the case of lipolysis, it is necessary to check the injection components. If the injection component temporarily reduces the size of fat cells, it may return over time, so it is necessary to check whether it has a component that reduces the number of fat cells by destroying fat cells. In addition, if steroids are included in the injection ingredient, there may be side effects such as irregular bleeding by affecting hormone balance, so it is recommended to check if steroids are included.
Both liposuction and lipolysis can have a greater effect only when diet control is performed at the same time. If it is difficult to control diet only with your will like bulimia, you may take an appetite suppressant. However, appetite suppressants can develop resistance and dependence, which makes it difficult to take them for a long time. Also, if you rely only on drugs, there are problems like the yo-yo effect when you stop taking them. Therefore, when using appetite suppressants, you should consult with the medical staff to properly use them when necessary, and when stopping the drug, you should be fully educated on how to take tapering, which reduces and cuts off the drug to prevent rebound phenomenon.
Q. Medieus Queen: You have been providing beauty, obesity, and various health information to many people through various media such as blogs, broadcasts, and YouTube. Lastly, if you have any plans or goals, please let me know.
A. Choi Bo-yoon: The reason why I first started blogging and YouTube was to deliver the medical parts that can be difficult to understand and fun to the general public. In particular, I'm providing health information on the areas of skin beauty and obesity that I usually deal with. A while ago, a man who is in charge of the management of our parking lot of the hospital said “thank you so much”. He lost 8kg by practicing dieting methods as he watched my YouTube. I feel most proud and rewarded when I hear that I've been helpful. There are a lot of ways to lose weight, but there are many cases in that an extreme diet can cause harm to your health or cause the yo-yo effect. So, my goal is to continue to make content and perform the medical treatment to help many people go on a healthy diet, a diet that they can do steadily without being hungry, and a diet without the yo-yo effect.
