Recently, the number of patients in their 40s and 50s suffering from degenerative arthritis, which was thought to be an elderly disease in their 60s or older, has increased noticeably. The Joint is the part of the human body that is most commonly used, but that is neglected in management. I met and talked with Nam Ki-se, Director of Nam Ki-se Hospital, which specializes in spine and joints.
Q) Is there a special meaning of the name of the hospital? Please introduce the hospital briefly.
A) Unlike in the past when hospitals were built under the name of doctors themselves, the names of hospitals have been branded at some point. As a result, it would be important for people to be treated at a famous hospital, and it wouldn’t be important for them to be treated by what kind of doctor. Sometimes, some patients who don't know that Nam Ki-se is the name of a doctor ask, “Did you make the name of the hospital as you want to leave something? The reason why I named the hospital using the name Nam Ki-se is to express my willingness to treat people while keeping the principle. I want to create a hospital that uses my name for the sake of conscience.
Q) What is the main cause of the increase in incidence in the joint and spinal sectors?
A) With the increase in life expectancy, treatment for geriatric diseases has become a big part of modern medicine. In particular, degenerative diseases are occurring a lot. Most of them develop knee arthritis and lumbar disc stenosis due to aging. Older people in their 70s and older suffer from degenerative arthritis in the joints and spinal stenosis in the spine. For those elderly people who suffer from arthritis, how long they live is important, but they are very interested in how to live comfortably without being sick. In other words, these days, the quality of life is more important. Accordingly, the number of patients who want to receive appropriate treatment is increasing.
Q) Do you have any recommendations for treatment for patients with severe knee pain?
A) Recently, as artificial joint surgery has developed, more people are satisfied with surgery, and interest in it is also increasing. In the early days when artificial joint surgery began to be introduced in Korea, there were various complications, especially so-called extended legs that could not bend joints. So many people still hesitate to operate even though their joints hurt very much. However, in recent years, as the material of artificial joints has improved, and surgical technology has developed, most patients are satisfied with the results. The competent medical staff at Namgise Hospital mainly specializes in artificial joint surgery on the knee and has operated more than 350 times a year, a total of 7,000 times. Of course, many hospitals claim that they are good at artificial joint surgery, but the reality is that no hospital dares say that it is good at tactful conversion that requires surgery again due to a problem. This is because it is difficult to produce good results due to the high difficulty of surgery. However, the medical staff at our hospital have sufficient experience in tactile surgery, so I am confident that they have the skills that no one dares to follow.
Q) Please explain the artificial joint surgery in detail.
A) Artificial joint surgery is a surgery that removes pain in the knee joint by inserting new cartilage that is harmless to the human body in the place where worn-out knee cartilage is. It is also called joint replacement, or artificial joint plastic surgery. The cartilage covered at the end of the bone is cut to about 7-8mm thick, and artificial objects that fit the shape of individual knees are inserted into it. The main purpose of artificial joint surgery is to make it easier to walk without pain when the joint hurts due to arthritis and to make daily life easier if the shape of the joint is twisted and uncomfortable to walk or the joint is hardened like an extended leg. In general, pain is the most important factor in determining surgery, and surgery is considered six other factors: dysfunction, radiation result, age, health status, occupation, and activity.
Q) What programs do you run for medical staff who come to receive training?
A) Currently, the hospital is running a short-term artificial joint training course (2 months) that Professor Cho Woo-shin has been conducting at Asan Medical Center in Seoul. In addition, it is fully equipped with facilities and educational programs for domestic and foreign medical staff who want to observe and learn surgery and provides educational opportunities for other surgeries in addition to artificial joint replacement and tactful conversion through certain procedures.
Q) I'd like to hear about the future goals of
the hospital.
A) As the "best medical treatment" rather than the "appropriate medical treatment," we will conduct " a well-treated treatment." The ultimate dream is to create a hospital where it offers 24-hour treatment with 25 specialists and more than 200 beds. In the process, we would like to be superior to other large hospitals in the field of artificial joint replacement. Finally, the goal is to make Nam Ki-se Hospital emerge as the top priority in downtown Seoul when talking about "Orthopedics where a proper treatment specialist operates".
