Treatment of ‘hair loss’ and ‘obesity’ in Korea to which the world pays attention
The number of foreign patients who come to Korea for treatment is increasing by more than 30% every year. In particular, when it comes to surgery that requires meticulous technique, Korea is preferred for its excellent hand technique. Recently, Korea's treatment of 'hair loss' and 'obesity' is in the limelight, regardless of East or West. 14% of the world's population has hair loss and 2.1 billion people with obese. To solve their concerns, I met two key doctors in each field.
Q. MEDIEUS QUEEN: How do you define the criteria for hair loss?
A. Hwang Seong-joo Dermatology Clinic CEO Hwang Seong-joo (hereinafter referred to as Hwang Seong-ju): Hair loss can be suspected if the hairline on the forehead gradually rises as the hair thins or the parted area widens, and more than 60 to 70 hairs per day are continuously lost.
Q. MEDIEUS QUEEN: At what stage do you recommend hair transplantation?
A. Seongju Hwang: Generally, hair loss is divided into 1 to 7 stages. Usually, stage 1 is a slightly M-shaped head. It is very helpful to undergo a hair transplant from stage 3 or higher when hair loss has progressed to some extent. It is difficult even for a hair expert to know exactly how much hair loss will progress and how far it will go. However, since transplanted hair does not fall out, transplantation should be considered by comprehensively judging family history, current hair loss status, and progression patterns
Q. MEDIEUS QUEEN: Please explain the post-hair transplant process.
A. Sungjoo Hwang : Transplanted hair starts to fall out 2 weeks after surgery and 70-90% of it falls out within 1 month, but the lost hair starts to grow slowly 3-4 months after surgery. In 6 to 7 months, it rises by 3 to 4 cm, and in about a year, it grows long. Results may vary slightly depending on the thickness of the person's hair, the amount planted, age, and the amount of hair that can be collected. The best results can be obtained only when customized surgery is performed according to the characteristics of each patient.
Q. MEDIEUS QUEEN: How painful is the hair transplant surgery?
A. Seongju Hwang: In the case of hair loss patients, they come for a hair transplant after trying everything In most cases, they are introduced by their friends who have good results of transplant, or at the persuasion of their wives. A lot of people are afraid of pain, but since we do 3-step anesthesia that keeps during surgery, we operate without causing pain to the patient. Most of the people who were worried before surgery say after e operation that 'If I knew it wasn't such a big deal, I would have done it sooner'.
Q. Medius Queen: What do you think are the conditions for the renowned doctor?
A. Sungjoo Hwang: Once a patient arrives, I listen carefully to what the patient wants. And no matter how much the patient wants it, if the prognosis is poor when predicting the outcome, I think it is who can sincerely tell him from the family's point of view that 'This is not right'. If you do what the patient wants, you can make money. But when the expected results are obvious, I don't think it should be done.
Also, he shouldn't stay at the current level of surgery or treatment. You should always try to improve. Patients who have undergone surgery may say, “This is uncomfortable,” or side effects may occur. We need to try to improve that part somehow.
Lastly, I don't think the renowned doctor should not keep the knowledge in him. I wrote a Korean hair transplant textbook. I think that he should share effective ways to prevent side effects or cases with good prognoses.
Q. MEDIEUS QUEEN: Is there anything I should be aware of when choosing a hospital and specialist?
A. Sungjoo Hwang: I recommend hospitals with a lot of experience, hospitals that work only for hair, hospitals with professionals specialized in hair follicle separation, and hospitals that perform at least 4 surgeries per week. When receiving a hair transplant from an inexperienced doctor, various side effects may occur, so you should think carefully when deciding on surgery.
Q. MEDIEUS QUEEN: What is the most memorable case of hair transplant surgery?
A. Seongju Hwang: The most memorable case is a patient with leukemia. After surgery for leukemia, all of his hair fell out, so he couldn't plant it. But she received a bone marrow transplant from her sister. I planted the hair of her sister who did her bone marrow transplant into the patient, which was the first operation in Korea. These people are memorable. And Han Ki-beom, who had a short bed, is also memorable (laughs), and marathon runner Lee Bong-ju, who always wore a headband as sweat dripped down into his eyes. Also, a young female actress who was worried about having a wide forehead got the lead role in a historical drama after a hair transplant. I felt very rewarded. If it wasn't for me, she wouldn't have been able to become the main character (laughs).
Among the conditions for a young face, abundant hair is indispensable. Normal daily activities are possible without any major hindrance from the 2nd day after the operation. As only two visits are required after the surgery, it is a surgical method that is highly recommended even to foreigners.
Q. MEDIEUS QUEEN: There are many misunderstandings about hair loss. Please explain.
A. Seongju Hwang: - If you wash your hair frequently, does it fall out more?
: As the hair that falls out during wash is the resting-phase hair that is supposed to fall out, it is not a big concern.
- Does wearing a hat make your hair fall out more?
: Wearing a hat in strong UV rays or harmful environments can protect the scalp and hair.
- Is washing your hair with soap good for preventing hair loss?
: It is good to keep your scalp clean by washing your hair with a shampoo that has good cleaning power suitable for your scalp.
