Leading the Global Hub in Robotic Surgery
Established in 1969 for the first time in Korea, ‘Yonsei Cancer Center’ is now establishing itself as the best ‘Yonsei Cancer Hospital’ in Korea. Park Bo-hyun, CEO of BNH Korea, met Director Noh Seong-hoon of Yonsei Cancer Hospital, which is growing into a world-class medical institution by transferring from the cancer center belonging to Severance Hospital to an independent hospital affiliated with Yonsei Medical Center.
Q. MEDIEUS QUEEN: Yonsei Cancer Hospital was built 45 years after the establishment of Yonsei Cancer Center, the first cancer center in Korea, in 1969. Why did you build Yonsei Cancer Hospital?
A. Director Noh Seong-hoon of Yonsei Cancer Hospital (hereinafter referred to as Noh Seong-hun): As we live in an aging society, interest in cancer, the number one cause of death in Koreans, is increasing. In addition, as medicine advances and early cancer diagnosis increases, the cancer cure rate has exceeded 70%, and the survival rate of cancer patients is also increasing. On the other hand, the number of patients who have experienced cancer is over 2 million, which means that even if cancer is cured, the possibility of developing another cancer is increasing.
Since cancer is a genetic disease, people who have had cancer once are more likely to have it recur or be exposed to other cancers. In order to overcome cancer, not only treatment but also total care of ‘prevention-diagnosis-treatment-rehabilitation’ is required. With the establishment of a cancer hospital capable of total care for cancer treatment, more professional cancer treatment has become possible through independent management.
Q. MEDIEUS QUEEN: Why is total care important in cancer treatment?
A. Seonghun Noh: It is classified that prevening before cancer occurs is primary prevention, quickly detecting and treating early cancer conditions is secondary prevention, and focusing on patient rehabilitation is tertiary. In the meantime, most patients and medical institutions have paid much attention to early diagnosis, which is secondary prevention.
However, since cancer sufferers are more likely to develop cancer, integrated and systematic management from prevention to rehabilitation is important. The more information about the genome, the more it is possible to manage the high-risk group for cancer, so primary prevention can increase. In addition, through the recently developed next-generation sequencing (NGS), patients with a high incidence of cancer and their families can be discovered, and cancer can be detected early through education and active screening, or treatment such as preventive surgery can be performed.
Q. MEDIEUS QUEEN: I wonder what differentiates Yonsei Cancer Center from other cancer centers. What is the competitive edge of Yonsei Cancer Hospital? I would also like to hear about the future Yonsei Cancer Hospital's vision.
A. Seonghun Noh: The best hospital is the one that provides the good treatment. Yonsei Cancer Hospital has world-class competitiveness in cancer treatment.
First of all, the world's leading medical staff, equipment, facilities and advanced systems are independently equipped. It introduced ‘Robotic IMRT’ for the first time in Asia. It introduced ‘the da Vinci surgical robot’ first in Korea before Japan, and has performed more than 20,000 surgeries so far. With such numerous surgical experiences, Yonsei Cancer Hospital can be said to have become a so-called world-class hub of robotic surgery. Numerous foreign doctors attend training every year, and the Yonsei Robot Symposium has become an international symposium by conducting Live Surgery.
In the field of radiation therapy, such devices as Tomotherapy and Lynac as well as 'heavy particle therapy devices' were introduced for the first time, and about 25% of the construction is currently underway. Test driving is expected in 2021 and treatment to be available for general patients in 2022. Heavy particle therapy devices are excellent in treating intractable cancers such as lung cancer, liver cancer, and pancreatic cancer, and have the highest mortality rate for cancer cells compared to all existing radiation therapy equipment, while they have the lowest dose exposure to normal tissues. Anticancer treatment also has numerous clinical cases of new drugs that can respond to patients with recurrence or special cases beyond the standard, as well as treatments suitable for NCCN guidelines (National Comprehensive Cancer Network, standard cancer treatment guidelines).
Q. MEDIEUS QUEEN: I understand that Yonsei Cancer Hospital operates various specialized centers in addition to 13 cancer centers. Please give a detailed explanation.
A. Noh Seong-hun : The cancer prevention center has a "cancer survivorship program" for patients who have already been cured of cancer which is the first time in Korea. It is to detect early risks through active management of people who have experienced cancer and secondary cancer diagnosis. In addition, a major feature is that experts in the field of health checkups and exercise manage them through diet programs, exercise programs, and genome tests even after complete recovery.
In addition to programs for patients, it also plays a role in fostering and managing experts through systematic programs. The Cancer Knowledge Information Center provides various information and knowledge through education and counseling to patients, their families, guardians, and all visitors who need cancer information.
We have a new treatment paradigm that enables management from cancer prevention to post-treatment including a personalized treatment center that introduces 'best team' treatment where medical staff from various departments, patients, and guardians come together to diagnose cancer and determine the best-personalized treatment.
The Scar Formation Laser Center removes or reduces scars for patients who are uncomfortable with scars left on their bodies after cancer surgery or who need cosmetic supplementation.
Q. MEDIEUS QUEEN: Lastly, is there a life rule that ordinary people must follow if they want to prevent cancer daily?
A. Noh Seong-hoon: As is widely known, it is important to control your lifestyle to avoid smoking, drinking, and obesity, exercise appropriately, and eat a low-salt diet. But the most important thing is regular checkups. If you want to prevent cancer, it is recommended to have a checkup every year. This is because even if cancer is found, it is unlikely that cancer has progressed within the screening cycle. Since it is difficult to diagnose all cancers, even though there are genetic testing methods, early diagnosis through screening is the most important.
