We protect the safety of the mother and child
As the proportion of elderly mothers in Korea increases every year, high-risk mothers are also increasing. If you are a high-risk mother, special attention is needed because there is a high possibility of an emergency. We met and talked with Cha Dong-hyun, director of Gangnam Cha Women's Hospital, a delivery-oriented hospital for a happy pregnancy and safe childbirth, focusing on strengthening treatment for high-risk mothers and newborns.
Q. Medieus Queen: How are you? I heard that Gangnam Cha Women’s Hospital started a specialized delivery-oriented operation separating from Gangnam Cha Hospital. Please briefly introduce yourself and Gangnam Cha Women's Hospital.
A. Cha Dong-hyun, director of Gangnam Cha Women's Hospital (hereinafter referred to as Cha Dong-hyun): I'm Cha Dong-hyun, the director of Gangnam Cha Women's Hospital. Gangnam Cha Hospital opened this Gangnam Cha Women's Hospital in mid-February.
Currently, the first opening is in place, and the second opening will be held soon. If we complete the second opening, we will make it a new concept building. Since the opening of Gangnam Cha Hospital in the 80s, many mothers have loved our hospital. In order to repay the love that we have received to mothers and children with a new system suitable for the times, it has been newly opened as Gangnam Cha Women's Hospital.
Gangnam Cha Women's Hospital, the best maternity hospital in Korea, operates a neonatal intensive care unit and a high-risk intensive care unit to care for not only normal delivery but also high-risk pregnancies, high-risk newborns, and premature babies. We are also preparing for pregnancy or space for early mothers. Although there are various healthcare methods that pregnant women can do before childbirth, they often don't know how to manage their weight, what medical diseases are, and how much exercise they need to do. Therefore, our hospital will open a hotel space specializing in prenatal care so that early mothers can be managed according to a one-on-one guide by professional medical staff.
Q. Medieus Queen: Genetic diagnosis has been strengthened by specializing in delivery-oriented hospitals. I wonder what process manages the genetic diagnosis.
A. Cha Dong-hyun: Genetic diagnosis is to examine genetic diseases through chromosome tests. The scope of chromosome tests used to be about Down's syndrome, but now the scope of tests is expanding and the accuracy is increasing. It is possible to diagnose and consult genetic diseases in any hospital. Most hospitals send samples to the genetic testing room and consult based on the results. However, it is often not solved simply by sending and receiving samples. Experimental methods may be added for each case, and in some cases, families may also have to conduct experiments, requiring communication between many laboratories and medical staff.
Our hospital has a separate genetics lab where the doctor in charge communicates with the doctors in the lab, takes additional samples if necessary, and conducts new necessary tests.
The genetic diagnosis process allows the doctor to consult and treat the patient, explain the contents of various tests, and let the patient choose.
In addition, when the results come out, the doctor in charge helps the mother understand and learn what is needed based on the results. Through this process, additional tests will be conducted if necessary. As such, it takes a lot of communication to get this meaningful result.
The genetic diagnosis process has the advantage of being able to do these tasks right away and being able to handle them precisely.
In addition, we have a variety of cases to help many patients, and in some areas, we have introduced and implemented a voyeur test (MomPre) that has not yet been introduced by other hospitals.
Q. Medieus Queen: High-risk mothers are on the rise with the recent increase in elderly mothers. What diseases are common in high-risk mothers and how should they be managed to prevent them?
A. Cha Dong-hyun: First, the most common disease in high-risk mothers is an internal medical disease. High blood pressure and diabetes are the most common of them. There were no relevant symptoms before pregnancy, but they can be caused by pregnancy.
The diseases like gestational diabetes that occur during pregnancy disappear after childbirth, but the probability of developing them after childbirth increases and can also affect children.
The second is a change in placenta function. The placenta is a very important organ that serves as a nourishment for children. Changes in placenta function increase the probability of giving birth to underweight children.
The third is a problem with the number of chromosomes. If the chromosome count is abnormal, the probability of miscarriage increases, and the probability of pregnancy decreases. Also, surgery is often needed rather than normal delivery, so there are many cases of giving birth to underweight or premature babies.
Of course, it is better to give birth early age to prevent this risk, but if not, the prognosis may vary depending on how premature babies are managed, how to extend even if they have early labor, and whether they give birth in a prepared place with doctors and facilities.
Therefore, it is recommended to communicate with your doctor from time to time so that you can receive good care and make decisions according to the situation.
Q. Medieus Queen: I know there are a variety of customized delivery methods in Gangnam Cha Women's Hospital. Please tell me what to consider to choose a delivery method that fits the patient well and is safe.
A. Cha Dong-hyun: There are various delivery methods, but there is no big difference. Delivery methods are often made according to the country or culture.
Typically, in the naturalistic method of giving birth in Northern Europe, a mother does not go to the hospital, but cooks and gives birth at home. However, as it has pros and cons, we provide a special space for those who are fully aware of these pros and cons and want to do so.
Other delivery methods include Leboyer delivery under
darkening the lighting, cutting the umbilical cord late for communicating with the mother, underwater delivery, painless delivery that you can self-control the pain, and family delivery.
The delivery method is an individual's choice, but in the case of delivery methods such as naturalistic childbirth, you need to receive sufficient education and be fully aware of related problems. Currently, many mothers prefer a safe delivery to deliver according to a well-planned plan.
Q. Medieus Queen: Are you planning any postpartum care programs?
A. Cha Dong-hyun: Foreign mothers eat out and go out with their children not long after giving birth. However, I have seen many cases where mothers in Korea are sicker if they live in the same pattern. So from my experience, I think they should be good at postpartum care.
Postpartum care makes recovery much faster through relaxation.
So we're planning postpartum care programs, such as, first, a spa-like massage to relax muscles, second, an exercise program to help pelvic muscles destroyed after delivery, and third, a diet program to help lose weight during pregnancy.
Q. Medieus Queen: Lastly, if you have any personal goals or goals for Gangnam Cha Women's Hospital, please tell us.
A. Cha Dong-hyun: Gangnam Cha Women's Hospital was created in return for those who loved our hospital. Therefore, the goal is to let all those who visit the hospital experience a satisfactory delivery. Also, I heard a lot from the mothers who gave birth at our hospital that it was such a unique hospital, and that if I give birth again, I want to give birth here again. In the era of severely low birth rates, our goal is to contribute to society even a small amount by helping mothers give birth safely until the end without giving up.
