Don't delay your health check-up in the COVID-19 situation
As interest in a healthy life increased, regular medical checkups became a prerequisite. For those who are reluctant to visit examination institutions due to COVID-19, we met with Shin Sang-yeop, chairman of the academic committee of the Korea Medical Research Institute to find out how to get a safe and proper health checkup.
Q. Medieus Queen: The KMI Korean Medical Research Institute has been contributing to the promotion of national health through health examination projects for more than 30 years. Please introduce yourself and KMI Korea Medical Research Institute.
A. Shin Sang-yeop, chairman of the academic committee of the KMI Korean Medical Research Institute (hereinafter referred to as Shin Sang-yeop): The KMI Korean Medical Research Institute (hereinafter referred to as KMI) is a comprehensive health examination institution established in 1985 with the goal of "healthy for life." Currently, it operates health examination centers in seven regions across the country, three in Seoul (Gwanghwamun, Gangnam, Yeouido) and four in provincial areas (Suwon, Daegu, Busan, and Gwangju). KMI is contributing to the early detection, prevention, and promotion of people’s health through health examination projects and fulfilling its social responsibilities through various social contribution projects. I am a specialist in infectious medicine as the chairman of the KMI academic committee. Currently, KMI operates overseas travel clinics and adult vaccination clinics. I conduct related lectures and research and am interested in topics related to overseas travel infectious diseases and adult vaccination.
Q. Medieus Queen: It is a little unfamiliar for
a specialized health examination institution, KMI to operate an academic committee is operated. Please explain the background of the operation, major activities, and achievements.
A. Shin Sang-yeop: KMI Institute supports researchers every year as a part of the support for Korea's research for basic medicine development and disease prevention. Also, it conducts joint research with external research institutes like Yonsei University Graduate School of Health through MOUs and research agreements. In addition, we support research activities by several KMI internal researchers. The academic committees make important decisions in this research support process.
KMI has provided about 3.3 billion Korean Won to 133 research projects so far through the "KMI Research Support Project," which has been running for 14 years since 2008. The "KMI Research Support Project" has been continuously producing results with more than 40 SCI-level papers published. KMI, an institution that contributes to the early detection of diseases and the promotion of national health through medical checkups, will continue to provide necessary cooperation and support for the development of the medical and healthcare sectors.
Q. Medieus Queen: Many people are worried about visiting the medical examination center due to COVID-19. The 2020 national checkup has also been postponed until June this year. Please give me some advice for those who want to have a checkup.
A. Shin Sang-yeop: Early diagnosis is important for serious diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. In particular, if you have a family history of cancer or have a bad lifestyle such as smoking and drinking too much, comprehensive checkups are very helpful. Due to COVID-19, the 2020 national health examination has been extended until June this year. The examination institution conducts the checkup by strictly complying with the quarantine rules. So, it is recommended not to delay the examination.
In addition, except for gastroscopy, you rarely take off your mask during the checkup. If you make sure to wear a mask during the waiting time and examination, maintain a distance from others as much as possible during the waiting time, and follow personal quarantine rules such as washing your hands and feet clean after the examination, you can have a checkup safely. As the time is distributed and movements are controlled based on the number of reservations, it is better to visit at the time informed after making a reservation rather than visiting on the same day. KMI is conducting daily quarantine and disinfection inside the examination center and elevators, as well as measuring body temperature and investigating the history of visiting dangerous areas of COVID-19 at all seven health examination centers nationwide.
Q. Medieus Queen: Many people know the importance of medical checkups, but please give us advice on how to diagnose diseases by choosing the right screening product and screening.
A. Shin Sang-yeop: KMI provides a comprehensive health examination program tailored to the age, gender, and characteristics along with the national health examination and cancer examination. The White Program for adults in their 20s and 30s has inspection items necessary for early detection and risk assessment of various diseases, prevention of adult diseases, and health maintenance.
The Silver Program has strengthened the White program with ultrasound and CT scans to check for diseases that have recently increased incidence.
The Gold Program has enhanced cardiovascular and digestive disease testing for adults over the age of 40 on top of the Silver program. There is a platinum program that adds brain MRI and PET-CT tests.
It also provides programs of Carnation checkups for elderly people and Wedding checkups, a pre-marriage examination program.
You can choose the examination program suitable for you after consulting with an expert (KMI Call Center Health Planner). After the examination, consultation on the results will be conducted after a comprehensive judgment by experienced specialists in each field of internal medicine, family medicine, surgery, and radiology. When an important disease is found, treatment, surgery, and emergency treatment are possible at leading university hospitals in Korea through a tertiary medical institution-linked service.
Q. Medieus Queen: Is there any business or plan that KMI is preparing?
A. Shin Sang-yeop: KMI is making a great effort and large-scale investment in providing leading health examination services to improve national health and customer convenience. As part of that, the expansion of the Suwon Examination Center in March this year. The expansion and renewal of the Gangnam Examination Center, and the introduction of the nationwide KMI Intelligent Comprehensive Health Examination System (KICS), are planned.
In addition, KMI is also working with KT to promote a "customized digital healthcare business" to provide healthcare services that help change the future beyond confirming current health through health checkups.
KMI is also continuing to strengthen social contribution projects that practice sharing and co-prosperity. In particular, we are making efforts led by the KMI Social Contribution Project Group to help more people have dreams and hopes by applying to various fields according to social and economic situations.
Q. Medieus Queen: As an infectious medicine specialist, please give me advice on things to be careful about when visiting medical institutions like health examination institutions.
A. Shin Sang-yeop: In the current situation where COVID-19 is prevalent, it is necessary to follow basic social distancing and quarantine guidelines. KMI is doing its best to prevent COVID-19 by reinforcing facilities to prevent droplets like acrylic plates, checking the temperature of staff, and wearing masks. Also, we thoroughly disinfect the hospital and distribute reservation time to prevent overcrowding of examinees. Those who have health checkups should not be off their masks except for gastroscopy. So, if you always wear a mask during examinations, keep a distance of more than 1 meter from others, and follow personal quarantine rules such as washing your hands and feet after examination, you can get a checkup safely.
