You have to keep your back in mind for frequent work from home
Now, No face-to-face life rapidly increase and the form of work from home is no longer new. As the time to live that requires standing up, such as commuting to work, going to restaurants, or gym is greatly limited, pain in the neck, shoulders, and waist increases unexpectedly. If left untreated, it may even touch the nerves which worsens. I met Park Chun-geun, Director of Wills Memorial Hospital, who took the lead in distributing minimally invasive spinal surgery, one of the spinal surgery methods, in Korea.
Q. Medieus Queen: Hello. Please introduce yourself as a hospital director and the Wills Memorial Hospital.
A. Park Chun-geun, director of Wills Memorial Hospital (hereinafter referred to as Park Chun-geun): I am Park Chun-geun, chairman of the Thomas Medical Foundation, a medical corporation, and Director of Wills Memorial Hospital. Since its opening in 2002, Wills Memorial Hospital in Suwon is the only hospital in Gyeongki province that has been designated as a spinal specialized hospital by the Ministry of Health and Welfare for three consecutive times. It also has been designated as a training center where medical skills are transmitted to foreign doctors. As such the hospital is promoting Korea's excellent medical skills through active international activities.
Q. Medieus Queen: Due to the spread of the coronavirus, indoor living hours with telecommuting are increasing. In particular, as the number of people complaining of back pain increases, the word “chair disease” appeared in the WHO World Health Organization. What are some spinal diseases that visitors usually complain of?
A. Park Chun-geun: The cold weather and the virus have made it difficult to exercise. As mentioned, various diseases caused by the habit of sitting for a long time while walking or standing decrease due to telecommuting. This is called chair diseases, which are occurring not only in office workers but also in students. Chair disease can cause discomfort in various parts of the body, such as the waist, hips, wrists, and neck. Symptoms to be careful about due to chair disease include turtle neck syndrome, carpal tunnel syndrome, and swelling of the body.
In particular, the lumbar disc is the most representative spinal disease. The disc refers to a cartilage called the intervertebral disc that exists between the vertebrae and the vertebrae, which serves to absorb the impact on the vertebrae. However, if you sit in a chair for a long time, the intervertebral disc is abnormally pressurized and stimulated, and swelling (swelling) or the jelly-like nucleotoxin pulposus in the intervertebral disc escapes. As it compresses the spinal nerves, various neurological symptoms such as pain and muscle weakness appear, which is intervertebral disc exodus, which we commonly refer to as a "back disc."
To prevent such a back disc, if you sit for about an hour, it is recommended to get up for about 5 minutes, and stretching is helpful. If it is difficult to make time separately, it is recommended to reduce the amount of time you sit down to do something, or move your body by using the stairs instead of the elevator.
Q. Medieus Queen: Is the turtle neck syndrome that you mentioned different from the neck disc? I wonder about the difference between the two.
A. Park Chun-geun: The normal neck bone maintains a C-shaped curve with a convex front and distributes the impact like a spring. However, deformation occurs when the muscles that hold the neck bone in a poor posture or lack exercise are weakened. As the normal C-shaped curve collapses the neck comes forward which leads to a "straight neck" and "turtle neck." Every time the head comes forward 1cm, the neck bone is loaded with a load of 2 to 3kg, and the back neck and both shoulders are stiff and painful due to a load of up to 15kg. In severe cases, this can lead to a neck disc, which can lead to a situation where the nerves are pressed against the disc as the posture slowly changes, resulting in loss of strength in the legs and difficulty walking. In the early stages of turtle neck syndrome, it can be treated with pain relief, physical therapy, and posture correction. However, if the symptoms worsen and worsen to a neck disc, injection treatment should be considered.
Q. Medieus Queen: In other words, if the pain such as the turtle neck is left unattended, the disease expands to the nervous system such as the disc. These days, when exercise is restricted due to COVID-19, what are some tips for taking care of the spine?
A. Park Chun-geun: I recommend taking a walk around your house and getting some sun. Sunlighting seems like nothing, but there is no better exercise than walking in the sun for musculoskeletal health. Vitamin D that our body needs are enough to be exposed to the sun for about 30 minutes two to three times a week. If you can't go outside, it's better to enjoy yourself by the window. It is also related to chair disease. If you reduce sitting time and stands for about 5 minutes an hour, and just do a simple stretching, it relaxes the spine, shoulders, and neck muscles, and strengthens the abdominal, hip, and thigh muscles. Sitting down is not good for your health because you don't have physical activity. Therefore, it is recommended to walk around when calling on your cell phone and to make a habit of standing up whenever necessary by keeping trash cans or water away from your desk.
Q. Medieus Queen: In the past, many people perceive spinal surgery as an inevitable surgery after delaying and delaying it. I'm curious about the development of spinal surgery compared to the past.
A. Park Chun-geun: Minimally invasive spinal surgery is a surgical method that has the advantage of rapid recovery of patients by minimizing damage to surrounding tissues and lowering the risk of infection with minimal incision. Except in special cases, it can be performed relatively safely for elderly patients. Existing endoscopic spinal surgery had difficulties in surgery and limitations in surgery as endoscopy and surgical tools were put together in one hole. Recently, however, two-way spinal endoscopy allows ultra-precision endoscopy to be inserted into one side through two small holes less than 1cm, and surgical instruments are inserted on one side to perform detailed work, so the cause of back pain can be eliminated more accurately and quickly. With the development of these technologies, there are few recreational symptoms such as pain, so the return to daily life is being made quickly.
Q. Medieus Queen: Lastly, if you have a goal, please tell us.
A. Park Chun-geun: We will ensure continuity of treatment for spinal and joint trauma patients by opening additional emergency rooms and intensive care units 24 hours a day. In addition, we will continuously research and strive to establish ourselves as a general hospital-level spinal hospital centered on the best spine/joint in Korea by reinforcing basic medical departments such as internal medicine, surgery, diagnosis, and examination. I hope health and happiness will always be with you and your family even in the COVID-19 pandemic situation. Thank you.
