Hidden time bombs, cardiovascular disease
Heart disease, the second-largest cause of death in Korea, has seen a noticeably increased over the last 10 years ago. Heart-related diseases are no longer just among the elderly. It has become so prevalent that not only the middle-aged but also young people have to worry. We met with Park Sang-won, a doctor at Sejong Hospital's cardiovascular center, to talk about cardiovascular diseases.
Q. Park Bo-hyun, CEO of B&H Korea (hereinafter referred to as Park Bo-hyun): I understand that Sejong Hospital, compare to other hospitals, has a specialized center. Please give me a brief introduction.
A. Park Sang-won, head of the Hyewon Medical Foundation at Sejong Hospital (hereinafter referred to as Park Sang-won): Sejong Hospital was built along the core history of Korea, and is the only cardiovascular specialized hospital in Korea designated by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. In 1989, when it was first awarded as Korea's first special cardiovascular treatment institution by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, since then, it was awarded "Exemplary Hospital for Cardiovascular Diseases (2005, 2008)," "First Cardiovascular Hospital (2011)" and "Second Cardiovascular Hospital (2015)", ever since it was established.
In November 2011, it was recognized by the U.S. Joint Commission International (JCI) as a hospital providing international standard medical services, and in 2014, it was certified again and proved to be an internationally recognized cardiovascular general hospital. Sejong Hospital, which has the optimal infrastructure for treating cardiovascular diseases, aim to provide medical solutions based on convenience of patients.
Q. Park Bo-hyun: Recently, the incidence of heart disease has been on the rise rapidly, what is the main cause?
A. Park Sang-won: The biggest cause of heart disease is due to an aging population. The older you get, the more likely you are to have problems with your blood vessels, so the incidence of cardiovascular disease naturally increases. Also, the reason why coronary artery disease is steadily increasing is the Westernized lifestyles. Chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and obesity all cause symptoms of clogged coronary arteries and are related to intakes of Western food. In addition, stress in a competitive society seems to be a big cause.
Currently, the incidence of heart diseases in East Asia, such as Korea and Japan, is high, but still less than other countries, and there are many vascular diseases and arrhythmia patients in developed countries, and valve disease patients in underdeveloped countries.
Q. Park Bo-hyun: What are some ways to prevent heart disease?
A. Park Sang-won: Early diagnosis and proper treatment of chronic diseases are the most important. Chronic diseases that lead to heart disease needs to be controlled rather than cured, so continuous management is required. When a chronic disease is identified, it is the principle to treat with medication, weight loss is induced, and dietary control is performed to reduce pressure in the blood vessels. It is recommended to reduce alcohol and cigarettes and take good care of your body by exercising regularly. This way, the risk of cardiovascular disease can be greatly reduced. Hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia are not symptomatic illnesses. However, if you take proper measures before you have symptoms, you can effectively prevent complications such as cardiovascular disease.
Q. Park Bo-hyun: Sejong Hospital is known for its medical experts, is there a special treatment plan that is different from others?
A. Park Sang-won: The biggest feature of our hospital is that there are so many heart-related specialists. Not only the numbers but also they are the best in their own field of expertise. In fact, when diagnosing a patient's illness, you cannot think of each part separately, instead, you have to diagnose as a whole, accessing the overall condition of the patient, and decide on treating the most important, the heart can only tell you so much. The cardiovascular department has many emergency patients, thus teamwork between medical staff is vital, there are often moments during surgery that require collaboration with other departments, including cardiology and thoracic expertise.
From the start of Sejong Hospital, we have established an environment suitable for collaboration by conducting mentoring programs and conferences periodically. We share opinions and exchange them with all medical departments, knowledge is expanded and treatment methods are found which could not have happened if we are working alone. An internal system of collaboration has been established at our hospital, and we plan to continue to develop it.
Q. Park Bo-hyun: What are the measures to prevent recurrence, complications, and worsening of symptoms after treatment?
A. Park Sang-won: Rehabilitation aims to improve the quality of life after treatment and to enjoy life without any major alterations. It improves lifestyle to be healthily, restores and maintains organ functions, and manages patients with anxiety or depression so that they can be mentally healthy. Sejong Hospital's Cardiac Rehabilitation Center provides education on diseases and risk factors to patients and prescribes and guides individualized customized exercises for each patient. In addition, it operates a program to manage and modify dietary habits and help lose weight. As a result, the patient's chronic disease, high blood pressure, or blood sugar is improved, enabling a healthy return to daily life.
Q. Park Bo-hyun: What kind of service does Sejong Hospital's Cardiovascular Center, which has been certified JCI twice in a row, provide for foreign patients?
A. Park Sang-won: Counseling and management services are provided from before entering the country to after leaving the country, and the entire process from treatment to examination, hospitalization, treatment and discharge is operated through a one-stop system. In addition, for accurate communication and rapid response, all coordinators are local medical professionals and are provided with training in Korean and Russian.
Q. Park Bo-hyun: What are the future goals of the cardiovascular center at Sejong Hospital?
A. Park Sang-won: Based on the know-how and capabilities that Sejong Hospital has accumulated, we will provide the services that patients really need. In the future, we will continue to change the paradigm of treatments and play a leading role in the field of cardiovascular disease treatment.
