Treatment of lung cancer without pain and fear
When we think of the hospital, we are often afraid and scared. Procedures such as injection and blood tests are bound to make you feel that you are already sick. I believe coming to hospital should not be all painful, anxious, and fearful beyond simple cancer treatment, and there is always a doctor who can see from the point of view of the patient and aims to treat towards a full recovery.
We listen and learnt about lung cancer from Dr. Shim Young-mok, at Samsung Medical Center, a legendary thoracic surgent that cuts away death and revive lives.
Q. CEO Park Bo-hyun of B&H Korea (hereinafter referred to as Park Bo-hyun): What is the current level of medical technology in Korea?
A. Professor Shim Young-mok of Samsung Medical Center (hereinafter referred to as Shim Young-mok): Our advancement to medical technology is well enough to be recognized in the world. However, there are many other things that are interesting besides the direct treatment by doctors. Samsung Medical Center has more than 1,200 cases of surgery aiming for full recovery every year. There are not as many cases in U.S. The volume of treatments and surgeries is huge, and the survival rate is more than 78% for the first period.
In addition, our cancer center provides comprehensive cancer treatments ranging from prevention, treatment, examination, education, research, and rehabilitation. It provides accurate information to patients and their families in regards to cancer, as well as operates various integrated education programs such as music, art, and laughter therapy to improve the quality of life among cancer patients.
The "Supportive Care Center" aims to improve the quality of life and provides "comprehensive cancer treatment" to relieve the physical and mental pain, anxiety, and fear experienced by cancer patients and their families, and to help them return to society as soon as possible.
Q. Park Bo-hyun: I heard that you are doing customized treatment plans for the patients, please explain in detail.
A. Shim Young-mok: At Samsung Medical Center, more than 60% of patients are operated with a thoracoscope. Although we cannot measure the quality of surgery by how tiny the incision is, but is it important to perform surgery that meets the basic principles of cancer surgery purpose, which is remove the lymphatic gland and clean it up.
Lung cancer results are important. Treatment should produce less burdensome results in order to reduce complications after surgery. When you take medicine, it should be personalized and suitable to you. Recognizes the genetic difference, and combine with patient's personal history while treat them accordingly. That's why we need cancer healing center, cancer education center, and etc. Patients can go there and express their feelings, also they offer a number of other programs. You have to act as a guide to get out of vague anxiety.
With the number of cancer patients increasing, as well as increasing number of foreign patients, it is important to create a more suitable system to provide high quality services to patients.
Q. Park Bo-hyun: Please tell us about your future plans.
A. Shim Young-mok: I think we should go beyond just cancer treatment to become a hospital without pain, anxiety and fear. When you go to the hospital, you already feel sick, on top of that, the fear of injection, blood collection, etc. From the patient’s point of view, we should think about a system where we can eliminate pain and torture. I'm always thinking from a patient's perspective. The same mentality goes for treating foreigners.
Having chosen a path that no one has chosen, we have now opened a Korean innovated integrated cancer treatment center to systematize the treatment process and changed medical care on a global level.
Q. Park Bo-hyun: I wonder what qualities do you think you need the most as a doctor?
A. Shim Young-mok: I think self-sacrifice is the most necessary. These days, we can't force one-sided sacrifices as it turns into a professional job, but I think Cardiothoracic surgery still requires a degree of sacrifices.
Surgeons also need to have a wealth of knowledge. The fate of a patient is not determined in the operating room, but at the moment he or she visits a doctor. You have to make plans for the patient in the right direction so that they can be receive the right treatment.
In that respect, Samsung Medical Center's Cancer Center is providing multidisciplinary treatment. As the book "Group Genius" mentioned, groups are geniuses, not individuals. When you solve a problem, no matter how good I am, people who can be better than me brainstorms together and discuss potential solutions, and that makes better results.
Of course, when I'm alone in the operating room, I need to have skills, instant judgment, and determination. When we do surgery, we have to do it in the way we know how to cure it, rather than save it.
Q. Park Bo-hyun: I wonder what do you usually do in your free time.
A. Shim Young-mok: I like hiking. It helps me a lot. I did rock climbing in high school. Rock climbing is somewhat similar to doing surgery. We have to finish the surgery as soon as it starts. I cannot leave the surgery just because it's difficult. If you start climbing rocks, you have to climb to the top to come down, it's dangerous to come down in the middle, so you cannot stop. I have to keep going with all my will and once I reach to the top, I feel great. The same goes for surgery. The harder it is, the greater the sense of accomplishment when I do well.
Q. Park Bo-hyun: Do you smoke?
A. Shim Young-mok: I don't smoke. I've smoked for more than a decade. When I became a resident, I couldn’t find a reason to smoke anymore, so I quit.
If you want to quit, it has to be done immediately. Because cigarette is extremely addictive, I sometimes dream of smoking cigarette in my sleep, so if I do it gradually, it wouldn’t have been successful.
Not smoking is the single most important thing in preventing lung cancer. Also eating well and exercise moderately, it is that basic and obvious.
Regular diagnosis is very important because lung cancer does not have obvious symptoms in the early stages. In particular, if you are in your 50s or older, and a smoker, or have a family history of lung cancer, cancer screening at least once a year is essential.
